LIGHTWEIGHT SMALL TEAM INDOOR ROWING WORLD RECORD

LONGEST CONTINUAL ROW ON AN INDOOR ROWING MACHINE IN AS a Small Team (Men, 20-29, LWT)

AWARDING BODY - CONCEPT 2

The world record attempt took place during Movember (24th-25th November 2023). Previously, I have broken the world records for the solo male 20-29 longest continual indoor row and tandem 20-29 male longest continual row. This time I am with a slightly larger team doing a similar challenge as a three with my good friends Alex Pierrot and Graham Moore. The duration of our rowing continuously on a Concept II indoor rower was 30 hours, setting a new world record in this category.

  • Start Date and Time: 7am on the 24th November 2023.

  • End Date and Time: 1pm on the 25th November 2023.
The location of the row: ROWBOTS City, in Broadgate Quarter, Unit 3 Snowden St, London EC2A 2DQ. We rowed within the 'studio room' within the gym.

Why Movember as the CAUSE?

Movember is an annual, global charity event that takes place during the month of November. The primary focus of Movember is to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, with a particular emphasis on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. The name "Movember" is a combination of "moustache" and "November," reflecting one of its distinctive features: participants, known as "Mo Bros" and "Mo Sistas," are encouraged to grow moustaches (moustaches) during the month to spark conversations about men's health.

Key Metrics / Stats

The distance rowed was Close to the equivalent of rowing the River Thames from source to sea!

Duration: 30 hours

Tandem: 3 rowers switching every 3 hours → each rower rows 1/3 of the total time, so 10 hours in total. Rest/sleep: 20 hours total per rower, broken into 3-hour chunks

Distance equivalent: 106 km per rower = total (317 km)

Calories burned: Each rower: 10 hours × 450 kcal/hour = 4,500 kcal (easy rowing pace) - equivalent of 2 large pizzas or 45 bananas each!

Sleep Deprivation: hallucinations, microsleeps, severe cognitive and physical impairment, coordination issues, and a high risk of injury. Brief rest periods were only partially restorative

Total rowing strokes: ~15,000 strokes each = total ~45,000 strokes

Average stroke rate: 22–28 strokes/min

  • Venue: Local gym → no travel emissions from flights or remote locations

  • Equipment: Used existing rowing machines → no additional manufacturing footprint

  • Clothing: Own gym clothes → no new clothing purchases, reuse

  • Nutrition: Local produce for fuel → reduces food miles and packaging

  • Waste: Zero single-use plastics → bottles, packaging, utensils. Also, recycled leftover food and packaging

  • Visitor transportation: Encourage bike or walk or train to gym for anyone supporting the event
